Summary:
This lesson, which includes an applet with Integer or Cusinaire Bars, contains material to introduce the many basic mathematical concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, charts and algebra. You may want to select the topics to be covered depending on the grade level of your students.
There are many activities directed to different grade levels. Review the lesson descriptions to determine which ones you want to use for your students' level. Encourage the students to work on lessons beyond those assigned.
Grade Level:
1st to 7th.
Objectives:
Students will:
- Have a strong understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, charts and algebra
- Become familiar with basic mathematical concepts by visualizing them when using the Integer Bars
- Become familiar with the associative and commutitive rules, prime numbers, the distributive property
- Learn the meaning of the Least Common Multiple or LCM, as well as Fraction Complements, Percentage, Rational and Irrational Numbers
- Be able to work independently on all the concepts, doing the many exercises provided, and verifying their answers
Materials:
A computer with Internet access. The entire lesson, including the applet, can be downloaded.
Procedure:
The procedures are well covered in the lesson description pages. It consists of material to present the basic mathematical concepts listed above to the students as well as exercises for them to practice and check independently.
